Also known as Korean Mint and Giant Hyssop, Agastache is a very attractive, reliable, long-flowering perennial with aromatic herby foliage.
- An abundance of cool white bottlebrush-like flowers are produced on slender upright stems from late June until November. Deadheading regularly will prolong the flowering time.
- Its oval, pointed foliage is very aromatic with a kind of liquoricey scent, and is known to have some traditional herbal and culinary uses.
- Requires well-draining soil in full sun or dappled shade, and does not like areas that get too wet in winter. A very common cottage garden plant due to its abundant flowering and tall upright form, making it also a staple in prairie-style planting combined with ornamental grasses. It has good drought tolerance, once established, and is also suited for coastal and Mediterranean-style gardens too. Its flowers can make a nice addition to cut flower arrangements.
- It is a huge wildlife attractor, with its flowers appealing to a wide range of pollinator species, and the seed heads that follow can be beneficial to birds in the winter months.
- Can sometimes be considered short-lived, and so may need replacing every few years. This can be helped by dividing congested clumps every 3-4 years, and by planting appropriately so it is protected from very wet winter gardens.
- Height and Spread approx. 60-90cm x 40-60cm.
- Supplied in a 9cm pot
