Pennisetum massaicum 'Red Bunny Tails'

An early flowering variety of Pennisetum, it has a tidy compact habit, and is reasonably hardy - although some care may need to be taken during unusually cold winters. 

- Narrow, linear foliage forms a neat clump to about 40cm, that is green for the summer months, gradually turning to a straw yellow-brown in late autumn when the frost sets in.

- From late June, small cylindrical flower plumes are produced on upright stems, and are soft and fluffy to touch, similar to a rabbits tail! The flowers start of bright red to pink in colour, deepening to red brown in the autumn. 

- Very drought-tolerant once established, it is very suitable to hot, sunny areas, coastal gardens, and can add interest and texture to rockeries, cottage gardens and mixed borders too. They are also great for pots, and make an excellent addition to fresh cut or dried floral arrangements.

- Should be cut back to 4-6 inches in March to allow for lush fresh growth for the upcoming growing season.
